About this position
The University of Iowa Department of Radiology is recruiting two full-time Postdoctoral Associates in Physiologic Pulmonary Imaging. The positions are based in Iowa City, United States, and are part of the Carver College of Medicine.
The projects focus on using multi-spectral dual-energy computed tomography and hyperpolarized xenon MRI to evaluate lung structure and function. Research activities may include lung, lobe, airway, and vascular-tree segmentation; tissue characterization; regional blood-flow and ventilation analysis; scanner-signal harmonization; and integration of quantitative imaging results with demographic data to identify novel disease phenotypes.
One position emphasizes engineering development, while the other focuses more strongly on applying quantitative imaging and subject demographics to establish disease phenotypes. A specific project examines changes in lung structure and function during a smoking-cessation program. The successful candidates will work in a multidisciplinary team involving physicians, physiologists, electrical and biomedical engineers, and computer scientists, with access to dedicated computing and imaging facilities.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in an engineering or science discipline such as Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Epidemiology, or Physiology. Required skills include graduate research experience in image processing and signal processing or in epidemiological use of image-processing outputs, proficiency with R, MATLAB, SPSS, or SAS, strong analytical and data-analysis abilities, and excellent communication skills. Experience with pulmonary function testing, lung pathophysiology, lung-disease epidemiology, and CT or MRI image analysis is desirable.
The position is full time at 100% effort, with salary commensurate with qualifications. Applications require a CV, letters of interest, and contact information for three references. The advertisement remains open until the position is filled.

What's required
A Ph.D. in an engineering or science field such as Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Epidemiology, or Physiology is required. Applicants must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, graduate research experience in image processing and signal processing or in using image-processing outputs to assess disease phenotypes and epidemiological relationships, proficiency in a statistical analysis environment such as R, MATLAB, SPSS, or SAS, and strong analytical and data-analysis skills. Desirable qualifications include knowledge of pulmonary function testing, lung pathophysiology, and the epidemiology of lung disease, as well as experience developing medical image analysis methods for CT and MRI or other imaging modalities. Applications require a curriculum vitae, contact information for three references, and letters of interest.
How to apply
