About this position
Centre for Deliberative Democracy, University of Canberra
This postdoctoral fellowship sits within the University of Canberra’s Centre for Deliberative Democracy in the Faculty of Business, Government and Law. The project examines how major international conflicts shape public debate, social cohesion, and democratic life in Australia, with a particular focus on the ways the Israel-Palestine and Russia-Ukraine conflicts spill over into the Australian public sphere.
The fellowship is part of an Australian Research Council Discovery Project, Foreign Conflicts, Domestic Divides: Advancing a Deliberative Response, led by Professor Selen Ercan, Emeritus Distinguished Professor John Dryzek, and Dr Jordan McSwiney, in collaboration with partners across Australian universities. The research brings deliberative democratic theory into conversation with public sphere research and intractable conflict studies.
The successful fellow will contribute to both theory-building and empirical research. The project combines normative democratic theory with large-scale computational analysis and in-depth qualitative research to understand how these conflicts are reproduced, contested, or transformed across parliamentary, media, digital, civil society, and everyday public sphere settings. The role also involves developing publication outputs, organising scholarly events, and participating in the intellectual life of the Centre for Deliberative Democracy.
This is a research-focused opportunity in a collaborative environment with strong links to national and international scholarly networks. The position offers the chance to work on a timely and socially significant topic at the intersection of conflict, communication, and democratic theory.
