About this position

Karolinska Institutet is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Physiology within the Division of Environmental Physiology at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in Stockholm, Sweden.

The project focuses on experimental human studies examining physiological responses to environmental and operational stressors, including altered ambient pressure, acceleration, temperature variation, sleep deprivation, fatigue, hypobaric and hyperbaric exposures, and decompression strain. The research sits at the intersection of human performance, aviation physiology, diving medicine, cardiovascular physiology, and autonomic regulation.

The successful candidate will work primarily at the Campus Solna laboratories and may also participate in field-based experimental studies. Responsibilities include experimental planning and execution, data collection and analysis, interpretation of results, manuscript preparation, lab management, undergraduate teaching, and supervision of master’s and doctoral students.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in environmental physiology or a closely related field, or equivalent scientific competence by the end of the application period; documented experience with human physiological experiments; continuous cardiovascular monitoring; HRV and baroreflex analysis; echocardiography and vascular ultrasound; and exercise physiology methods such as maximal oxygen uptake testing. English fluency is required, while Swedish is advantageous. Experience in aviation/decompression physiology, cardiac imaging, venous gas emboli detection, sleep deprivation/fatigue physiology, and human biological sample handling is considered beneficial.

Funding and appointment: this is a full-time temporary postdoctoral position for 1 year with potential prolongation. Karolinska Institutet notes standard employee benefits, including holiday, occupational pension, gym access, and medical care reimbursements. No stipend amount is stated.

Application window: applications are due by 20 August 2026 and must be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system. Required documents include a CV, publication list, one-page research summary, motivation letter, and contact information for at least two academic references.

Contacts: Antonis Elia (Assistant Professor) and Gunnar Schulte (Professor) are listed as contacts for the position.
