PhD Position in Molecular Pharmacology of GPCRs and Cancer at Karolinska Institutet

Karolinska Institutet is offering a fully funded PhD position in the Molecular Pharmacology of GPCRs team, led by Assistant Professor Paweł Kozielewicz, focusing on the mechanisms of activation and signaling of orphan G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in cancer cells. The research aims to uncover novel interactions and signaling pathways of orphan GPCRs, with the goal of developing new therapeutic strategies for cancer. The project utilizes advanced techniques such as proximity labeling, CRISPR-Cas9 genome engineering, proteomics, and BRET-based biosensors, and involves both experimental and in silico approaches to ligand discovery. The doctoral student will plan and perform laboratory experiments, generate and validate engineered cell lines and biosensors, analyze proteomics and BRET datasets, and contribute to ligand identification. The project is highly collaborative, including work with Prof. Gunnar Schulte (Karolinska Institutet) and Prof. Sandro Cosconati (University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, Italy) for computational ligand screening and molecular modeling. The student will participate in internal and external meetings, doctoral courses, and teaching activities, with strong support for producing high-quality, publishable research. Applicants must have a master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field, or have completed at least 240 credits with at least 60 at the master's level. Proficiency in English (equivalent to Swedish upper secondary school English B/6) is required. Substantial, documented experience in receptor pharmacology, molecular biology, cell biology, and data analysis is necessary. Prior experience in GPCR pharmacology is a strong merit, and skills in bioinformatics are valuable. Candidates should demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills, a proactive attitude, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. The position is a full-time doctoral studentship for up to 4 years, with a contractual monthly salary. Employees have access to a modern gym for free and receive reimbursements for medical care. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities, offering a creative and inspiring environment with opportunities for international exchanges. The application deadline is December 24, 2025. Applications should be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system, including a personal letter, CV, degree projects, publications, and documents certifying eligibility. For more information, contact Assistant Professor Paweł Kozielewicz at [email protected].
