About this position
The International Water Research Institute (IWRI) at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to work on membrane-based pretreatment for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination in Benguerir, Morocco.
The project focuses on developing, optimizing, and scaling advanced pretreatment solutions for seawater desalination. The fellow will monitor and characterize raw seawater through periodic sampling campaigns, assess physicochemical and biological water quality, and analyze relationships between feed-water characteristics and pretreatment performance using statistical and mathematical models.
The research will include designing, assembling, and operating a laboratory-scale membrane-based seawater pretreatment system. The fellow will optimize system configuration, validate performance, develop operation and maintenance procedures, and investigate practical approaches for safe, reliable, and efficient operation. Pilot-scale testing and field deployment will evaluate process robustness and operational behavior under real seawater conditions.
Additional work will involve interpreting operational data, diagnosing performance limitations and membrane fouling, proposing data-driven process improvements, and preparing technical reports, datasets, presentations, and project documentation. The fellow will also contribute to peer-reviewed publications and present findings at national and international conferences.
IWRI provides an interdisciplinary research environment spanning water, climate, sustainable development, desalination, demineralization, water treatment, recycling, and reuse. The institute emphasizes applied engineering, fundamental research, technological innovation, and collaboration with academic, public-sector, industrial, and international partners addressing water challenges in Africa and beyond.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Water-Process Engineering, Membrane Materials and Processes, or a closely related discipline. Relevant laboratory-, pilot-, or industrial-scale experience with desalination and/or filtration systems is required, as is hands-on experience with water treatment processes and water-quality analysis for evaluating treatment-system performance. A strong background in ceramic membrane materials and processes is advantageous. Experience contributing to or leading research projects, developing innovative practical solutions, writing high-quality scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, and working effectively in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams is desired. Fluency in written and spoken English and French is required. Applicants must be willing to travel for fieldwork and project activities and hold a valid driver’s license.
