About this position
Two post-doctoral fellow positions are available at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in the Department of Environmental Sciences & Engineering / Water Institute. The openings sit at the intersection of environmental engineering, environmental microbiology, and global public health.
Position 1 focuses on environmental microbiology and emerging methods. Working with Prof. Joe Brown, the fellow will measure pathogens in environmental media (water, soil, air) and human stool, and will develop, validate, and apply new methods for pathogen detection and quantification. The role includes sampling and analysis planning, laboratory oversight, data analysis, interpretation, and collaboration across projects. Experience with quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) is a strong plus.
Position 2 focuses on a drinking water disinfection trial in Ghana. Working with Prof. Joe Brown and international partners, the fellow will support a randomized controlled trial of drinking water disinfection, with substantial field work. The project includes applied environmental health microbiology, evaluation of water treatment technologies, field-team coordination, data quality oversight, timeline management, and stakeholder reporting.
Applicants must hold a PhD in environmental microbiology, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, epidemiology, or a closely related field, and should have a strong publication record including first-author papers. The team seeks organized, detail-oriented, independent researchers who enjoy interdisciplinary team science. For Position 2, international research experience in low- and middle-income settings is preferred.
These are post-doctoral fellow positions expected to start in January 2027 (start dates negotiable). Applications are reviewed immediately and will continue until both positions are filled. Apply via the UNC portal and include a cover letter, CV, three references, and one first-author publication. In the cover letter, specify whether you are applying for Position 1, Position 2, or both.
