About this position
Northeastern University and The Jackson Laboratory are seeking two co-mentored postdoctoral fellows through the JAX/Roux Institute joint Applied Data Science Postdoctoral Fellowship program. The fellows will be based at The Roux Institute in Portland, Maine, where JAX has co-located its data science team.
The program integrates biological research with applied data science, artificial intelligence, and computational modeling. Fellows will work with research faculty or research staff and experimental collaborators, with opportunities to collaborate across the Roux Institute and other Northeastern University colleges.
The fellowship cycle focuses on AI-powered data analysis for hypothesis-driven research related to addiction. Potential activities include knowledge-graph-driven data integration, AI-supported literature review, agentic database search assistants, multi-omics analysis tools, life-science foundation models, and AI-guided experimental design.
One project develops explainable graph neural networks to investigate gut microbiome–host interactions in cocaine use disorder. The work integrates microbiome functional profiles, host genetic variation, behavioral phenotypes, mouse systems-genetics data, and human genetic and multi-omic datasets to identify conserved pathways, microbiome-derived metabolites, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets.
A second project studies spontaneous and precipitated opioid withdrawal using self-exciting point-process models of continuous home-cage behavior in genetically diverse mice. The fellow will develop behavior-based indices, acquire and analyze multimodal data, and build machine-learning methods to identify temporal signatures and biomarkers associated with withdrawal mechanisms and severity.
The research environment combines computational data science, addiction neuroscience, genetics, microbiome research, and experimental life sciences within the Northeastern–Jackson Laboratory partnership.
