About this position
The National Research Council Canada is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow in Composite Structure Virtual Testing in Ottawa, within its Aerospace organizational unit. This two-year fellowship will develop a Certification-by-Analysis framework for composite airframe structures.
The project will create a Physics-Informed Mesh Graph Network solver that combines deep learning with governing physics to model complex composite failure mechanisms. The intended outcome is a fast, reliable and data-efficient alternative to conventional high-fidelity finite element analysis, supporting aerospace design, structural analysis, optimization and quantified reliability.
Applicants should hold a recent PhD in mechanical, civil or aerospace engineering, focused on computational mechanics of composite structures, or expect to complete the degree within six months of appointment. Required expertise includes composite damage modelling using finite element methods, Abaqus and user-subroutine coding, and machine-learning methods for engineering. Experience in verification, validation and uncertainty quantification, composite fabrication and testing, structural optimization, Python, large datasets, publications and multidisciplinary research is advantageous.
The fellowship offers a salary of $83,985–$116,641, with an average starting rate of $83,985 for new PhD graduates, plus benefits and a travel fund. Applicants must submit a resume, one-page statement of interest, PhD transcript and publication list. The closing date is January 7, 2027, at 23:59 Eastern Time.
