About this position
The University of South Africa (UNISA) is offering a three-year postdoctoral research fellowship in small and medium-sized carnivore ecology through the Applied Behavioural Ecology and Ecosystem Research Unit (ABEERU), within the Department of Environmental Sciences.
The collaborative project involves the Department of Zoology and Entomology and the Eugène Marais Chair of Wildlife Management at the University of Pretoria. Research will take place in the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve and will investigate interactions within assemblages of small and medium-sized carnivores from an ecological perspective.
Research activities will include diet analysis, occupancy and population estimation, and spatial ecology. The fellow will coordinate the initiation and implementation of component projects, oversee and assist with field data collection and analysis, and contribute to publications based on existing and newly collected data. The role also includes co-supervising postgraduate master's and PhD students conducting related studies.
The fellow will be encouraged to develop independent investigations within the broader project, including preparing grant proposals and obtaining ethical clearance. The research environment combines applied behavioural ecology, ecosystem research, terrestrial mammal ecology, conservation biology, camera-trap monitoring, GIS, and quantitative analysis, with fieldwork in a remote wildlife reserve.
