About this position

The Sustainable Agroecosystem Group at ETH Zürich invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on co-evaluating bio-inputs for smallholder farmers in Kenya. This project is part of the Agroecology Academy - Africa initiative, which aims to bridge research and practice by connecting smallholder farmers, agricultural stakeholders, and academics to foster sustainable agriculture across the continent.

The research will center on compiling and analyzing local farmer knowledge regarding agroecological practices, with a special emphasis on locally produced bio-inputs such as biofertilizers and biopesticides. The successful candidate will conduct literature reviews, surveys, focus group discussions, and interviews with food system actors in Western Kenya. Additionally, the role involves performing a meta-analysis of bio-inputs across sub-Saharan Africa and conducting rigorous on-farm testing of these inputs in the region.

Applicants should hold a PhD in agronomy, soil science, crop science, or a related discipline, and possess experience in interdisciplinary projects that holistically assess agricultural sustainability. A strong background in agroecosystem management, data analysis, and research methodologies is essential. Experience with surveys, focus groups, and interviews is advantageous. Candidates must be highly motivated, self-organized, and able to work both independently and collaboratively within a transdisciplinary team. Excellent communication skills in English are required, and candidates should be prepared for extensive fieldwork in tropical conditions.

The position offers a stimulating research environment with state-of-the-art facilities and opportunities for professional growth within a diverse and inclusive academic community. The appointment is for 24 months, with the possibility of a 24-month extension, and includes a competitive salary according to ETH Zürich postdoctoral levels.

To apply, submit your application via the ETH Zürich online portal, including your CV, a motivation letter (max 2 pages), and contact details for at least two references. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. For further information, contact Professor Johan Six at [email protected] (no applications via email).
