About this position

Stanford University is offering a full-time postdoctoral position under the mentorship of Stelios Serghiou in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. The interdisciplinary group brings together clinicians, engineers, and epidemiologists to develop and rigorously evaluate clinical intelligence that can make healthcare more proactive, personalized, value-driven, and continuous.

The postdoctoral researcher will lead an independent line of inquiry within a clinical AI prevention program focused on reducing missed opportunities to prevent heart attacks and strokes. The project uses longitudinal medical records to create evidence-based systems that identify patient needs and support timely clinical action.

Research activities span curating and interpreting large-scale medical records, training and evaluating generative AI and language models, and building conversational agentic systems that can reason over patient records, call tools, and check their own work. The researcher will also help develop dynamic dashboards that show clinicians what matters and what information is missing, while working directly with clinical collaborators to define meaningful outcomes and evaluate systems on real decisions.

The role combines methodological development with real-world clinical evaluation. During the first year, the researcher is expected to establish data access and infrastructure, develop early prototypes, produce an end-to-end system and evaluation harness, conduct clinical evaluations, and communicate findings through first-author publications, presentations, and open code. As one of the lab’s early hires, the postdoctoral scholar will contribute to shaping the group’s research culture and future development.

The research environment emphasizes rigor, reproducibility, transparency, collaboration, and practical impact, with dedicated mentorship and opportunities to work at the intersection of machine learning, epidemiology, data science, and clinical care.

Funding details

Full-time postdoctoral appointment with yearly renewal. The expected base pay is the Stanford University required minimum for postdoctoral scholars appointed through the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs: $79,056 for FY27. The position does not pay above the required minimum.

What's required

Applicants should have a completed or nearly completed PhD in computer science, engineering, data science, statistics, epidemiology, or an equivalent field, along with a first-author publication. Required experience includes training and applying modern machine learning and language models; building deployed or publication-contributing agentic systems with robust, tested Python; creating reliable large-scale data pipelines using SQL, cloud computing, and reproducible versioned workflows; designing rigorous evaluations and interpreting results using statistics and study design; demonstrating transparent, reproducible work; and communicating clearly and collaborating effectively with clinicians. Experience with longitudinal health data in secure environments, OMOP, FHIR, Epic, clinical NLP, imputation, entrepreneurship, or an MD is desirable but not required. Applicants should also demonstrate kindness, intellectual humility, collaboration, urgency, and dedication.

How to apply

Email a CV, a statement describing your interest in the lab, and a brief description of your proudest first-author publication to Prof. Stelios Serghiou at [email protected]. Applications are reviewed as they arrive.
