About this position
This postdoctoral project focuses on computational modeling and simulation of spreading processes in population-scale multilayer social networks. The work is hosted at Uppsala University, within the Department of Information Technology and the interdisciplinary Information Laboratory (InfoLab), where research combines basic and applied approaches to extracting knowledge from social data.
The project is part of the eSSENCE graduate school in data-intensive science, linking methodological development in computational science and data science with applications in data-driven research. It also sits within collaboration between eSSENCE research programmes in Data Science and Intelligent Decision Making and Applied Scientific Computing and High-Performance Computing, bringing together expertise across computational science, data engineering, and application-oriented research.
Research in the project addresses how spreading occurs across large social networks when interactions are shaped by social structure and when processes move across multiple network layers. The postdoc will develop computational methods for simulating and inferring spreading in very large multilayer social systems, apply models to a network covering the Swedish adult population, and derive effective equation-based models that help study quantities that are hard to obtain through direct simulation alone.
The topic spans network science, social data analysis, scalable simulation, and the study of population-level diffusion phenomena such as the spread of diseases, opinions, information, and behaviors. The environment is explicitly interdisciplinary and connected to broader e-science and social-data research at Uppsala University.

What's required
A PhD degree in computer science, data science, computational social science, or a related subject, or an equivalent foreign degree, is required and must be obtained by the time of the employment decision. Preference is given to applicants who completed the degree no more than three years before the application deadline, though this may be extended for special circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, or union duties. Applicants should have experience working with social network data, excellent linguistic competence, and excellent programming skills. Experience in interdisciplinary research is an additional qualification.
