About this position
This two-year postdoctoral position at Umeå University is based in the Department of Computing Science, an international research and teaching environment with strong connections to national and international research networks. The appointment is part of the Privacy-aware transparency decisions research group, led by Professor Vicenç Torra, and the work is embedded in a broader environment connected to WASP, WASP-HS, and eSSENCE.
The project focuses on developing privacy-aware models for machine learning. The postdoctoral researcher will work on data-driven models for complex data, including temporal data, and on models built from synthetic data. The research emphasizes privacy metrics and models such as differential privacy, integral privacy, and k-anonymity, as well as centralized and decentralized data scenarios. For decentralized settings, the project includes federated learning and investigates privacy-preserving machine learning at scale.
The host group studies the fundamental principles needed to build privacy-aware AI systems and develop algorithms for these aims. It collaborates with several national and international research groups, contributes to the field through editorial work in data privacy, and maintains active contacts with both industry and the public sector. The position offers the chance to contribute to research at the intersection of machine learning, privacy, and secure data-driven modeling within a highly international academic setting.
The position is funded by WASP and starts on 12 January 2027, or by agreement.

What's required
A qualified applicant must hold a doctoral degree, or an equivalent foreign degree, in computer science or another subject relevant to the project. The doctoral degree should normally have been awarded within the last three years, unless special reasons apply. Documented knowledge and proven research experience in the design of algorithms and methods for data privacy and machine learning are required. Publications at leading conferences in machine learning, security and privacy such as NeurIPS, ICML, S&P, PETs, ESORICS or similar are highly meritorious. Very good English skills, both spoken and written, are required. A scientific and result-oriented working approach is expected.
