About this position
Politecnico di Milano is offering a 24-month postdoctoral contract in the Department of Mechanical Engineering within the academic area of applied mechanics. The project, titled “Leaky-wave focused ultrasound through metamaterial engineering”, focuses on developing and validating acoustic-metamaterial solutions for controlling ultrasound propagation and focusing, with particular attention to non-invasive transcranial focusing.
The research combines several connected themes: modelling acoustic-wave propagation in complex media, studying the interaction between ultrasound and structures/metasurfaces, engineering leaky waves, designing metamaterials, and controlling the ultrasound field in space. A significant part of the work is experimental, with laboratory activities aimed at manufacturing and validating the developed devices and checking their focusing performance under representative conditions.
The position is embedded in a mechanics-oriented environment and also includes teaching and laboratory support in Applied Mechanics for Machines, especially in areas such as wave dynamics, vibroacoustics, and acoustic metamaterials. The call is therefore suited to a candidate with strong interests in wave-based mechanics, ultrasound control, and experimental validation of engineered acoustic structures.
