About this position

Aalborg University’s Department of the Built Environment (BUILD) is inviting applications for a full-time, 2-year postdoctoral position in the C-BEAM Lab, led by Assistant Professor Qi Luo. The research focuses on next-generation cementitious materials, specifically microbial cement-based functional materials and energy storage. The C-BEAM Lab is dedicated to developing sustainable, multifunctional cementitious materials at the intersection of cement chemistry, microbial systems, and energy materials, with the goal of transforming traditional infrastructure into functional and sustainable systems.

The successful candidate will work on experimental development of cement-based functional materials, integrating cement chemistry, materials characterization, electrochemical testing, and bio-enabled approaches. Research topics include microbial cement-based supercapacitors, low-carbon binders, and life-cycle assessment of building materials. The postdoc will lead laboratory-based research, including cement formulation, specimen preparation, microstructural and chemical characterization, and electrochemical performance evaluation. There is also the opportunity to explore microbial–cement interactions and self-healing concepts.

Applicants should have a PhD in cement chemistry, cement and concrete materials, materials science, or civil/structural engineering, with strong experimental and laboratory skills. Experience with microbial systems or bio-electrochemical systems is advantageous but not required. The position offers a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment with access to advanced experimental platforms and international research collaborations. Good English skills and a record of scientific publication are expected.

The position is funded by the Villum Foundation (Villum Experiment) and offers salary and terms in accordance with Danish academic staff agreements. The application deadline is 24 April 2026, and the expected start date is 1 September 2026 or soon thereafter. Applications must be submitted via Aalborg University’s recruitment system and should include a motivation letter, CV, diplomas, publication list, and relevant documentation.

For more information, visit the C-BEAM Lab website or contact Dr. Qi Luo at [email protected].
