About this position

Postdoctoral position in microwave polarization analysis with FYST / CCAT at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (Germany).

This 4-year postdoc is part of the ERC Advanced Grant project NewPhysCMB (Finding New Physics from the Polarized Light of the Cosmic Microwave Background). The project focuses on cosmological parity violation, especially cosmic birefringence, using improved measurements of CMB polarization parity-odd correlations (TB, EB) from existing and upcoming experiments together with theoretical and numerical studies.

The successful candidate will work closely with Prof. Dr. Eiichiro Komatsu and the Physical Cosmology department at MPA, with access to proprietary FYST data through the German consortium of the CCAT collaboration. Research topics include higher-level analysis of TB and EB correlations from FYST / Prime-Cam polarization observations at high frequencies (280–850 GHz), characterization of polarized Galactic dust emission, and analyses of time-varying or anisotropic polarization-angle signals.

Ideal applicants have a strong background in CMB or submillimeter polarization data analysis, statistical inference, and/or Galactic foreground modeling. Experience with microwave mapmaking, power-spectrum estimation, or multi-frequency component separation is an advantage. The position is intended for a promising young scientist who completed their PhD within the last six years.

Funding is provided by the ERC Advanced Grant 2025 program NewPhysCMB. Salary follows German civil service rates and includes a special annual payment, 30 days of holiday, social security insurance, and public-service benefits.

Applications must be submitted electronically by 8 December 2026. Applicants should upload a CV with three referees’ contact details, a publication list, and a research summary plus statement of fit with NewPhysCMB / WP1. Reference letters are not required at the first stage.
