About this position
The Carl Zeiss Stiftung Independent Research Group on High-End Climate Risks at the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to help build usable climate risk estimates at impact-relevant scales. The project focuses on understanding worst-case climate outcomes, especially unprecedented and compounding extremes, and how they translate into societal impacts across sectors such as health, food, energy, and finance.
The postholder will work at the intersection of climate physics, Earth system analysis, advanced statistics, and machine learning. Key research themes include identifying the sources of bias in state-of-the-art climate model trends, developing AI/ML-based downscaling approaches for extreme and compound weather events, and designing physics-informed bias-adjustment methods that better preserve relationships in the tails of hazard distributions.
The role is embedded in a highly interdisciplinary and international research environment at MPI-GEA, a young institute founded in 2022. The institute studies the interrelationships between biophysical and human-made systems, with research spanning from the deep past to the future and with a strong focus on the Anthropocene and pathways toward more sustainable futures.
The successful researcher will also publish in leading journals, present at conferences, contribute to workshops and symposia, co-supervise PhD students, and help develop the group’s real-time online tool.

What's required
A PhD in climate, physics, mathematics, data science, or a related field is essential. Applicants should have demonstrated experience with climate model output, reanalysis and observational climate data, and large gridded datasets, along with strong programming skills such as Python. Experience with causality tools, AI and/or machine-learning methods is required, and a peer-reviewed publication record appropriate to career stage is expected. Excellent English communication skills and the ability to work independently and in a team are necessary. Advantageous experience includes deep learning for downscaling or bias adjustment, extreme value statistics, compound event detection, high-resolution climate simulations, HPC environments, impact-relevant applications, co-supervision of students, and academic teaching.
How to apply
Apply through the application portal and include a cover letter, CV (max 3 pages), a summary of research interests (max 2 pages), up to 10 relevant peer-reviewed publications, contacts of two referees, and any relevant certificates. The position remains open until filled.
