About this position

The University of Barcelona invites applications for a 12-month postdoctoral position in Neuroscience, focusing on the modulation of neuronal circuitry in brain disorders. The research group, led by Associate Professor Dr. Mercè Masana, is based in the Biomedical Sciences Department, Institute of Neuroscience. The project is multidisciplinary, combining photonics, neuroscience, molecular biology, and advanced imaging techniques to investigate neuron-astrocyte communication and its impact on neuronal network dynamics, particularly in the context of Huntington’s Disease.

The successful candidate will explore how phytochrome stimulation in neurons or astrocytes shapes communication and functional changes in mice, including behavioral modulation and brain network activity assessed by MRI. The research utilizes state-of-the-art optical tools such as in vitro calcium imaging, in vivo fiber photometry, optogenetics (light-activated phytochromes), and behavioral and fMRI measurements.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in Neuroscience, Biomedicine, or related fields, with substantial experience in mouse models, primary neuronal cultures, biochemical analysis (immunohistochemistry, western blot), MRI, in vitro cell cultures, calcium imaging, rodent experimental research, stereotaxic surgery, histology, molecular biology, immunofluorescence, and fiber photometry. Strong communication skills, teamwork, and proficiency in English, Catalan, and Spanish are required. A FELASA B certificate or equivalent is necessary. The position offers a full-time contract (37.5 hrs/week) with a gross annual salary of €30,000.

The selection process involves evaluation by a committee based on CV suitability, motivation letter, relevant experience, and field-specific qualifications. Candidates must submit an application form, full CV, and motivation letter. The award proposal will be published in the UB electronic office, and the selected candidate must accept the offer within 3 working days of notification. Priority is given to applicants with disabilities, in accordance with Spanish law.

For further details and to apply, visit the application link. The official start date is estimated as July 1, 2026, but may vary depending on administrative procedures. The position is not funded by an EU programme. Additional information and job details are available on the University of Barcelona website and the Euraxess portal.
