About this position
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in theoretical condensed matter physics within 2DQUEST — Quantum Engineering in Superconducting Graphene for Topological Qubits, a QuantERA 2025 project funded under the Horizon Europe framework. The position is based in the Madrid team led by Tobias Stauber at the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM-CSIC), with collaboration across theoretical and experimental groups at Chalmers University of Technology and the universities of Göttingen and Regensburg.
The project investigates topological superconductivity and Majorana modes in graphene, including proximity-induced superconductivity and interaction-driven superconductivity in rhombohedral multilayers. The appointed postdoc will develop many-body models of correlated and superconducting phases, contribute to the FORGE framework for large-scale simulations of graphene nanoribbons and junctions, and study quantum transport in close interaction with experimental partners.
Relevant methods include self-consistent Hartree–Fock theory, renormalization-group analysis, and Green’s-function methods. The role offers room for independent research within the project, publication of results, participation in scientific meetings, and research visits, with access to advanced computational resources.
The research environment is the Quantum Advanced Research Center (QuARC-CSIC), currently organised as a virtual institute. Research will initially be based at ICMM-CSIC in Cantoblanco, Madrid, one of CSIC’s largest centres. The institute provides a strong setting in materials science and condensed matter physics, and QuARC offers wider exchange opportunities across quantum technologies.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in physics or a related discipline by the start date, have a strong background in theoretical condensed matter physics and scientific programming, and ideally bring experience in superconductivity, interacting electron systems, topological phases, two-dimensional materials, or quantum transport. English proficiency at a good level is required.
Funding and contract: this is a full-time temporary postdoctoral position with a post-doc salary. The start date is 1 January 2027.
