About this position
Leiden University is recruiting a full-time postdoctoral researcher for a two-year project on youth, digital media, and democracy in education, based in Leiden, The Netherlands. The researcher will join the Cognition in Development (CoDe) Lab, led by Dr. Ili Ma, within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.
The project investigates how social media and digital technologies shape adolescents’ understanding of societal issues, democratic attitudes, and civic participation, and how education can strengthen young people’s resilience to online influences. The postdoctoral researcher will design and conduct longitudinal studies of educational interventions, collaborate with adolescents, schools, and societal partners, publish in international journals and impact reports, present at conferences, and co-supervise PhD projects.
Applicants should hold a PhD in developmental psychology, political psychology, computational social science, cognitive science, or a related field by the start date. Experience with behavioural experiments, quantitative research using R and/or Python, behavioural or computational modelling, social media data, or digital trace data is valued. Excellent English, independent research ability, ethical sensitivity when working with youth and personal digital data, and a collaborative and inclusive approach are required. Dutch proficiency is highly preferred, and familiarity with the Dutch educational context, longitudinal data, or participatory youth research is advantageous.
The position is funded by the European Research Council through the ERC Starting Grant DISINFORMED TEENS. It is a 1.0 FTE salaried appointment of 38 hours per week, initially for one year with the possibility of a one-year extension following positive evaluation. The gross monthly salary is €3,706–€5,760, with holiday and end-of-year allowances, ABP pension, commuting reimbursement, leave benefits, and flexible or hybrid working arrangements.
The starting date is flexible between November 2026 and February 2027. Apply through the Leiden University careers portal by 10 November 2026; applications are processed immediately. Questions may be directed to Dr. Ili Ma at [email protected].
