About this position
Northeastern University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Alternative Fuels for its Boston, Massachusetts Main Campus. Under the direction of a Principal Investigator, the researcher will develop alternative fuels and advance energy-innovation technologies through catalysis and reaction-engineering approaches.
The research addresses low-carbon fuel pathways including hydrogen, ammonia, synthetic and electro-fuels, sustainable aviation fuel, and fuels derived from biomass, waste plastics, or carbon dioxide. Work spans catalyst and process development, reactor design and scale-up, energy-conversion testing, and performance and techno-economic assessment.
The postdoctoral researcher will develop catalytic and electrocatalytic routes and materials, synthesize and test catalysts, measure reaction kinetics, and design, build, and operate bench- and laboratory-scale reactors and energy-conversion testbeds. Experiments will evaluate activity, selectivity, stability, and energy efficiency under realistic operating conditions.
The role also involves developing reaction and reactor models, conducting process analysis and techno-economic and life-cycle assessments, and establishing structure–performance and process–performance relationships through materials characterization and performance-data analysis. The researcher will contribute to peer-reviewed publications, presentations, proposals, sponsored-research reports, and the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate researchers while helping steward shared instrumentation.
The position is part of Northeastern’s R1 research environment, where interdisciplinary teams work across academic, government, and industry contexts to develop solutions to interconnected global challenges.
