About this position
The Lehigh University Plasma Control Laboratory is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the Lehigh University Plasma Control Group and contribute to computational fusion plasma physics research focused on turbulent transport, energetic-particle physics, predictive modeling, and AI-enabled digital twins for magnetically confined fusion plasmas in tokamaks.
The project combines high-fidelity simulations, reduced transport modeling, experimental validation, and machine learning. The postdoctoral researcher will work on global and multiscale CGYRO simulations, investigate turbulence spreading and nonlocal transport, study cross-scale interactions between ion- and electron-scale turbulence, and analyze how plasma conditions affect core, pedestal, and fast-ion transport. The role also includes development and application of AI methods for rapid surrogate models, calibration, state estimation, uncertainty quantification, and physics-informed prediction.
The position is embedded in the Lehigh University Plasma Control Group (LU-PCG), directed by Professors Eugenio Schuster and Tariq Rafiq. The group works at the intersection of theory-based modeling, predictive simulation, artificial intelligence, and plasma control, and maintains collaborations with major U.S. and international fusion facilities and research programs, including DIII-D, NSTX-U, KSTAR, WEST, ITER, and U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories.
The appointment offers the opportunity to contribute to DOE GENESIS-related research on scientific machine learning, surrogate development, and integrated core-edge simulation and control, while publishing results, presenting at conferences, mentoring students, and participating in a collaborative research environment spanning laboratory, university, and facility partners.

What's required
A doctoral degree in plasma physics, nuclear engineering, applied physics, computational science, or a closely related field completed by the start of the appointment is required. Applicants should have a strong foundation in plasma physics and magnetic-confinement fusion, demonstrated research experience in computational physics, numerical simulation, or scientific computing, and a publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Proficiency in at least one scientific programming language such as Fortran, Python, MATLAB, C, or C++ is required, along with strong writing, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, a commitment to fostering an inclusive research and teaching environment, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary, multi-institutional teams. Experience with CGYRO, fast-ion transport, reduced-MHD/gyrofluid tools, integrated transport modeling, tokamak experimental data, machine learning, physics-informed neural networks, uncertainty quantification, digital twins, or high-performance computing is desirable.
