About this position
The Lehigh University Plasma Control Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to advance control systems, artificial intelligence, and scientific machine learning for fusion energy. The role sits within the Lehigh University Plasma Control Group (LU-PCG), directed by Professors Eugenio Schuster and Tariq Rafiq, and centers on research for magnetically confined fusion plasmas in tokamaks.
The postdoc will contribute to a program that combines theory-based modeling, predictive simulation, and AI-enabled control for nuclear fusion. Core research directions include fast neural surrogate models for real-time prediction, state estimation and virtual sensing, multi-input multi-output closed-loop control, scenario optimization, actuator management, and integration of these methods into digital-twin workflows in MATLAB/Simulink through LU-PCG’s COTSIM environment.
The position is closely connected to major U.S. and international fusion efforts, with collaboration opportunities spanning facilities such as DIII-D, NSTX-U, KSTAR, WEST, and ITER, as well as U.S. Department of Energy research programs. The laboratory brings together expertise in plasma physics, applied mathematics, computational science, machine learning, and control engineering, offering a highly interdisciplinary environment for research, publication, and professional development.
The successful candidate will help develop and test advanced predictive and closed-loop tools for tokamak operation, supporting work on fusion-relevant modeling, control architecture, and digital validation under the LU-PCG research program.
