About this position
The University of New Hampshire invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate in Professor Mrityunjay Kothari’s group at the Durham campus in the United States.
The project advances the theoretical and computational mechanics of soft solids under coupled physical environments, including thermal, transport, phase-change, and damage effects. The researcher will develop finite-deformation continuum theories, translate constitutive models into verified finite-element implementations, and publish results in leading mechanics journals. Applications may use FEniCS/FEniCSx and Abaqus UEL/UMAT subroutines, with supporting scientific programming in Python.
The role also provides opportunities for collaboration, research-proposal writing, technical reports, conference presentations, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. Applicants need a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or Solid Mechanics by the start date, a strong publication record, expertise in nonlinear finite-strain continuum mechanics, and relevant finite-element implementation experience. U.S. work authorization and eligibility for federally funded research are required; HPC, PETSc, and Git experience are preferred.
The appointment is initially for one year, renewable subject to performance, continued funding, and sponsor support. Compensation is approximately $60,000 annually, with benefits. Applicants should submit a CV, cover letter, three professional references, research statement, and three representative publications through the USNH Workday portal.

What's required
A doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or Solid Mechanics must be completed by the start date, preferably with a specialization in Solid Mechanics. Applicants should have a strong publication record and demonstrated expertise in nonlinear finite-strain continuum mechanics and mechanics of solids. Proficiency in finite-element implementation using FEniCS/FEniCSx or Abaqus UEL/UMAT subroutines in Fortran, along with scientific programming in Python, is required. Strong knowledge of finite deformation and coupled continuum theories, custom element and material-model implementation, scientific communication, independent project management, collaboration, and the ability to work on federally funded research are required. U.S. work authorization at appointment is required. Preferred qualifications include experience with nonlinear elasticity, HPC, PETSc parallel solvers, and Git.
How to apply
Apply online through the USNH Workday application portal. Upload a resume/CV, cover letter, contact information for three professional references, a research statement, and three representative publications with contributions clearly identified. Applications missing required documents may not be considered.
