About this position
Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Schwartz Laboratory in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, at WashU Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, United States.
The interdisciplinary research program investigates the biology of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the host mechanisms that enable chronic infection. The laboratory aims to understand viral persistence and identify strategies toward a functional cure for chronic hepatitis B, a major global health challenge and cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality.
Research combines human models of viral infection, stem cell-derived hepatocytes, primary human hepatocytes, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, and genetically distinct HBV clones to examine host and viral factors governing infection and persistence. Recent laboratory work published in Cell identified a nucleosome-level molecular switch influencing HBV infection.
The postdoctoral researcher will train under a faculty mentor, assist with grant preparation and reporting, design and conduct experiments, evaluate findings, prepare research papers, and report results. Responsibilities also include maintaining research records, following ethical and good laboratory practices, and working collegially with trainees and research staff.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree. Relevant strengths include collaboration, data analysis and interpretation, experimentation, laboratory techniques, scientific writing, and results reporting. The laboratory environment may involve biological and chemical hazards, protective equipment, and standard care of research animals.
This is a full-time, on-campus position at the Washington University Medical Campus. Base pay is commensurate with experience, and eligible employees may receive comprehensive university benefits. Postdoctoral appointments have a five-year term limit, including previous postdoctoral experience.
Applications should be submitted through the Washington University Workday portal.
