About this position
University of Sydney is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Urinary Tract Disease Research Group within the School of Medical Sciences, based at the Charles Perkins Centre, Camperdown Campus, Australia.
The role focuses on immunology, host-pathogen interactions, microbiology, preclinical disease modelling, and translational research in chronic and severe urinary tract diseases, including urinary tract infection and cystinuria. The group is led by Dr Malcolm Starkey and uses human biospecimens, unique disease models, and multidisciplinary collaborations to investigate disease mechanisms and identify diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
Research themes include host mechanisms regulating urinary tract health and disease, biomarker discovery, and preclinical testing of novel therapies. The successful candidate will design and lead laboratory projects, use advanced techniques in immunology and molecular biology, analyse complex datasets, contribute to publications, mentor honours, PhD and research students, and support grant applications and ethics submissions.
Eligibility highlights include a PhD in immunology or a closely related biomedical discipline, substantial mouse-model experience, expertise in infection and inflammation biology, and a strong publication record. Desirable experience includes scRNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, organoid/3D culture systems, histology, confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry.
This is a fixed-term full-time postdoctoral appointment for 12 months, with a possibility of extension up to 2 years. The base salary starts from AUD 117,936 plus 17% superannuation. Applicants must have unrestricted work rights in Australia; visa sponsorship is not available.
Apply through the Workday portal with a cover letter, CV, and supporting documents by the application deadline.
