About this position
The University of Liverpool is recruiting a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of History for a collaborative medieval history project on An Edition of the Cartulary and Charters of Stixwould Priory and an Introduction to the Edition of the Bardney Cartulary.
Led by Principal Investigator Dr Kathryn Dutton at the University of Liverpool, with Professor Louise Wilkinson at the University of Lincoln, the project will produce a co-authored modern critical edition of the medieval cartulary of Stixwould Priory and complete the late David Smith’s edition of the Bardney Abbey cartulary. The work also includes initial outreach activities in Lincolnshire schools.
The postdoctoral researcher will work principally on the Stixwould cartulary and join the Department of History within the School of Histories, Languages, and Cultures. The research environment is especially suited to candidates interested in medieval monasticism in England and Europe, textual cultures of monastic communities, gendered approaches to monastic experience, medieval Latin texts, palaeography, codicology, and scholarly editing.
Applicants must have an excellent working knowledge of Latin, experience with medieval Latin texts and manuscripts, strong palaeographical and codicological skills, and editorial experience. Candidates whose PhD is still awaiting award may be appointed initially at Grade 6, with progression to Grade 7 following written confirmation of the PhD.
This is a fixed-term, full-time appointment until December 2027, involving 35 hours per week. The salary is £39,906 per annum, and hybrid or fully remote working is available. The project is funded by a Lincoln Record Society Nigel Burn Memorial Grant. Applications should be submitted through the University of Liverpool recruitment portal by 13 November 2026 at 23:30.
