About this position
University of Edinburgh MSc by Research in Scottish History
The University of Edinburgh is accepting applications for a postgraduate research MSc in Scottish History, beginning in September 2027. The programme is available full time for one year or part time for two years and is based in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
Students undertake a substantial piece of supervised independent research culminating in a 30,000-word dissertation. Research can span a wide chronological and thematic range, including medieval kingship and queenship, Scottish politics, the Reformation and religious change, witch-hunting, the Highlands, Scotland’s external relations and imperial involvement, and modern Scottish arts and culture. Related expertise is available through Celtic and Scottish Studies, Social and Political Sciences, Geography, Education, Divinity, Scottish Literature, archaeology, and classics.
Each student is allocated at least two supervisors. Applicants must identify a potential supervisor and obtain a written provisional agreement before the application can proceed. The research proposal should be approximately 1,000–2,000 words and should demonstrate knowledge of the proposed field. The programme offers structured research training, access to a substantial postgraduate research community, and proximity to resources including the National Records of Scotland, National Museum of Scotland, and National Library of Scotland.
Applicants normally need a UK 2:1 honours degree, US GPA of at least 3.25, or equivalent international qualification in a related subject. Required materials include a personal statement, research proposal, supervisor details and agreement, degree certificates and transcripts, two references, English-language evidence, and any required certified translations. Eligible applicants must also attend an online interview with prospective supervisors.
The application deadline is 1 August 2027, although applications may close earlier if demand is exceptionally high. There is no application fee. No programme-specific scholarship or stipend is stated; applicants should arrange tuition and living-cost funding independently and explore available scholarships.
