About this position
Northeastern University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a mixed-methods research initiative examining the validity and implementation of the International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC) as a rigorous and equitable pathway into college admissions.
The project investigates whether IBPLC results predict postsecondary success, whether advisors apply its assessment frameworks consistently, whether the credential measures its intended competencies, and how admissions professionals develop trust in the credential. Northeastern collaborates with Big Picture Learning U.S., Big Picture Learning Australia, and the National Association for College Admission Counseling, with support from the YTL Fund.
The postdoctoral researcher will contribute across the study’s quantitative and qualitative components. Work includes designing and managing longitudinal tracking for IBPLC students; coordinating consent, data collection, and case-study protocols; linking IBPLC scores and assessment data with college grades, persistence, and survey outcomes; and analyzing predictive validity and advisor-scoring reliability across sites.
The role also involves coordinating subject matter expert review of assessment frames across the six Learning Goals, examining alignment between those frames and student performance, and designing and analyzing admissions-leader focus groups, pilot application readings, and advisor and student surveys. The researcher will lead qualitative coding of interview and focus-group data and help maintain the project’s IRB protocols, data-use agreements, and study documentation.
Additional scholarly and professional activities include drafting annual research summaries, a comprehensive final report, peer-reviewed manuscripts, practitioner briefs, and conference presentations. The associate will work closely with the study’s principal investigators and partner organizations in a collaborative research environment focused on educational assessment, alternative credentials, college admissions, and postsecondary outcomes.
The appointment is based at Northeastern’s Boston campus with a hybrid schedule and some domestic travel expected.
