About this position

University of Maryland is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Nutrient Biogeochemistry within the Department of Environmental Science & Technology, College Park, Maryland, USA.

The position is hosted by Professor Gurpal Toor, whose research program focuses on nutrient management, soil fertility, water quality, phosphorus, nitrogen, and biogeochemistry. The postdoctoral researcher will work on understanding nutrient transformations and losses in agricultural soils and crop production systems, with emphasis on phosphorus management, nitrogen management, soil science, and sustainable agriculture.

Responsibilities include field and lab research to determine nutrient fate in soils using chemistry approaches, labeled and stable isotopes, and other advanced techniques; developing new guidelines for using waste products such as biosolids and manure to improve productivity and environmental sustainability; liaising with farmers, non-profits, and state agencies; and collaborating with existing personnel in the group. The work is described as approximately 25% field work, 50% lab work, and 25% writing, though this may change based on project needs.

Eligibility highlights: a Ph.D. in soil biogeochemistry, plant science, agronomy, soil fertility, ecology, or a related field is required, with emphasis on phosphorus and/or nitrogen in crop production systems. Candidates with experience in row crops, especially corn-soybean systems, are preferred. Applicants must have completed the Ph.D. within the last 5 years and hold a valid US driver's license. The position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Funding: one-year appointment with possible extension based on performance and funding availability. No stipend amount is listed in the post.

How to apply: submit the Google Form application, upload a cover letter, CV, three references, and a combined PDF of two relevant journal articles on N and/or P. The post says candidates should start as soon as possible.

Contact: [email protected]. More information is available via the University of Maryland directory page linked in the post.
