About this position
Durham University’s Department of Engineering is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in onboard carbon capture and storage within the UK Clean Maritime Research Hub, with financial support from the Department for Transport and EPSRC. The role is based in the Energy Systems Group led by Professor Tony Roskilly and focuses on policy-driven research on the life cycle greenhouse gas intensity of marine fuels.
The project is a strong fit for researchers interested in onboard carbon capture and storage, life cycle assessment, carbon accounting, circular economy, and wider marine energy systems. The successful candidate will contribute to modelling, accounting frameworks, simulation, case studies, and publication of research outputs, working closely with the principal investigator and project team.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a PhD or be close to submission in Marine, Mechanical, Chemical, Systems or Environmental Engineering, or a related subject. Experience is required in complex dataset analysis, attributional and consequential LCA of marine energy systems, carbon source/sink traceability, and assessment of carbon capture, transport, storage, and CO2 utilisation pathways. Strong writing, presentation, methodology development, and teamwork skills are essential. Desirable experience includes circular economy integration, publication record, student supervision, and proposal development.
Funding and contract: this is a full-time, fixed-term post until 31 March 2028, with salary at Grade 7 (£39,560–£46,970 per annum). The post includes standard university benefits and may support visa-related costs for eligible staff.
How to apply: submit an online application with a CV and cover letter addressing the person specification. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a presentation and interview, likely over two days. The closing date is 17 November 2026.

What's required
A PhD or near-submission PhD in Marine, Mechanical, Chemical, Systems or Environmental Engineering, or a related subject. Candidates should have experience compiling, analysing and interpreting complex datasets; conducting attributional and consequential life cycle assessment of marine energy systems; carbon accounting and traceability of fossil, biogenic and atmospheric carbon sources and sinks; and assessing carbon capture, interim storage, offloading, transport, permanent storage and captured CO2 utilisation pathways using life cycle approaches. Applicants should be able to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, write publication-quality material, present research at conferences, develop transparent and robust methodologies and models using professional software, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively. Desirable experience includes circular economy concepts, allocation approaches, a strong publication record, student supervision, and research proposal development.
