About this position
The National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering (NCCHE) at the University of Mississippi is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to advanced computational studies of water systems. The role centers on developing and applying numerical models for watershed hydrology, surface water systems, flooding, and water quality, with a strong emphasis on model development, calibration, verification, and validation.
The successful candidate will work on simulating core watershed processes such as rainfall-runoff transformation, streamflow routing, flood inundation, sediment transport, and pollutant fate and transport. The research also examines how land use change, climate variability, and extreme weather events affect flooding, watershed hydrology, water quantity, and water quality. A further part of the work involves building computational tools and decision-support systems for flood forecasting, watershed planning, and water resources management.
This is a research-intensive position in a computational hydroscience environment, with opportunities to combine numerical modeling, scientific programming, and data-informed analysis using field, monitoring, and historical event data. Experience with CCHE numerical models is especially relevant, and the postdoctoral researcher may also engage in laboratory or field-related studies and scientific software development.
Funding details
Fully or partially funded by external research grants; continued employment depends on satisfactory performance and ongoing funding availability.
What's required
Ph.D. in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, Earth Science, or a closely related discipline is required. The PhD degree must already be received or be about to be received at the end of the current semester. Preferred qualifications include experience in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, model calibration/verification/validation with field, laboratory, or observational data, peer-reviewed scientific publishing, scientific programming (e.g., FORTRAN, Python, R), laboratory or field research in hydrology/hydraulics/watersheds/flooding/water quality, and scientific software or computational tool development. Strong oral, written, and presentation skills are essential.
