About this position
The University of Arizona Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory invites applications for multiple full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate positions in exoplanet and debris disk coronagraph imaging. The positions are based at the Tucson campus in the United States and are connected with the University of Arizona Space Astrophysics Lab and the Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics.
Successful applicants will develop and lead an independent research program focused on high-contrast imaging of exoplanets and debris disks. Research may include modeling and observational preparation for next-generation direct-imaging campaigns using space- and ground-based platforms, in collaboration with instrument-building teams. Applicants may also contribute to exoplanet atmosphere modeling, high-contrast imaging data reduction, observing, open-source software or hardware, publications, presentations, outreach, and student mentoring.
The research environment offers interdisciplinary connections across astronomy, physics, planetary sciences, and data science, as well as access to major observing and instrumentation facilities. Relevant projects include the Lazuli ExtraSolar Coronagraph, Giant Magellan Telescope instrumentation, and James Webb Space Telescope instrument teams. Postdoctoral researchers may submit their own science proposals.
A PhD in Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics, or a related science must be completed by the time of hire. Preferred experience includes high-contrast imaging data reduction and observing, exoplanet science, exoplanet atmosphere modeling or related processes, open-source software or hardware development, and technical communication.
The full-time appointment provides full university benefits, including health, dental, vision, and life insurance, paid leave and holidays, and tuition reduction benefits for eligible employees and family members. Salary follows NIH Salary Guidelines and depends on experience. Two vacancies are listed, with a target hire date of September 1, 2027. Applications are accepted until the positions are filled.
