PhD opportunity at the University of Exeter in Mathematics and Statistics focused on marine heatwaves , climate science , statistics , data science , and mathematical modelling . The project investigates how extreme sea temperatures vary across space and depth in the northwest European Shelf seas, and how the probability and intensity of marine heatwaves may change under future climate scenarios. The research combines extreme value theory , generalised additive models , machine learning, and hig...

About this position

Newcastle University is recruiting two Postdoctoral Research Associates (PDRAs) for an NERC-funded project on adaptation under climate change and development-centric demography in a warming world.

PDRA 1: Experimental Evolutionary Ecology (now open) will design and deliver laboratory and field experiments using a tractable model system (bulb mites) to generate empirical data on life-history, development, and population processes.

PDRA 2: Eco-evolutionary Demographic Modelling (opening soon) will develop novel modelling approaches integrating development, energetics, and demography to study adaptation and extinction risk under warming.

The project is highly interdisciplinary and collaborative, linking theory and empirical work, with opportunities for public engagement (including a Minecraft Education component). The role is based at the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, Newcastle University, UK.

Funding: NERC-funded postdoctoral research positions.

Eligibility/fit: Candidates with experience or interest in experimental evolutionary ecology, eco-evolutionary modelling, demography, climate-change adaptation, and related quantitative or experimental methods are likely to fit well.

Application: One role is already open and the second is opening soon. Start is planned for Summer 2026.

Funding details

NERC-funded project. The post is a paid postdoctoral research associate position; no stipend, tuition, or scholarship details are given in the post.

What's required

Applicants should be suitable for a postdoctoral research associate role in experimental evolutionary ecology or eco-evolutionary demographic modelling. The post mentions laboratory and field experiments using bulb mites for PDRA 1, and developing novel modelling approaches integrating development, energetics and demography for PDRA 2. Interdisciplinary experience spanning theory and empirical work would be advantageous.
