About this position
Aix-Marseille Université is offering a 1-year postdoctoral research contract within the Institute of Movement Sciences (ISM UMR7287) in Marseille, France, at the intersection of movement sciences, anthropology, neurophysiology, and rehabilitation. The project is part of the PEPR REINVENT programme and focuses on how phantom limb phenomena such as voluntary phantom movements and induced sensations can be integrated into prosthetic control to make prosthesis use more intuitive and reduce cognitive load.
The postdoctoral researcher will investigate new ways of representing and communicating phantom limb experiences so that amputees, healthcare professionals, neuroscientists, and prosthetic engineers can collaborate more effectively. The role includes organising and facilitating focus groups involving amputees, engineers, and physical and rehabilitation medicine physicians, and translating subjective bodily experiences into forms that can support prosthetic development and rehabilitation practice.
This is a highly interdisciplinary position with collaboration across several partner rehabilitation centres in France. The post involves travel and multi-day stays at partner centres; importantly, travel expenses and focus group organisation costs are fully covered by the project. The work environment is described as intellectually stimulating and socially impactful, with direct links between fundamental research and medical/prosthetic applications.
Eligibility requirements include a PhD degree held by the effective start date, preferably in Anthropology (CNU Section 20) or Integrative Neurosciences (CNU Sections 74 or 69), together with prior postdoctoral experience in sensory perception related to pathologies. Strong candidates will also have interdisciplinary research experience and/or experience with creative or qualitative methods. Excellent French and English are required.
The appointment is full-time (35 hours/week) and begins on 1 January 2027. Applications must be submitted by email with a CV, PhD diploma or graduation certificate, at least one recommendation letter, and a short project intent statement explaining the applicant's proposed approach to representing and communicating phantom limb experiences. The deadline is 28 October 2026.
The position is based at the Institute of Movement Sciences in Marseille, at the heart of the Calanques National Park, offering a strong research setting in a beautiful location.
