About this position

Tampere University is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Computational Biophysics) position in the BioInterfaces group at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. The project is centered on membrane proteins, especially lipid scramblases, and combines computational biophysics, structural biology, and protein design in a collaborative international environment.

The successful candidate will join a recently established research group using molecular dynamics simulations to study biomolecular systems. The project has secured funding to investigate and design lipid scramblases through high-throughput coarse-grained and atomistic simulations, biasing methods, constant-pH simulations, protein design, and the development of an online database. Experimental collaborators will contribute complementary support, making the role well suited to someone who enjoys interdisciplinary teamwork and communication across computational and experimental settings.

Core duties include coordinating the day-to-day research activity of the project, designing and running simulations, analyzing data, communicating with collaborators, supervising the doctoral researcher on the project, preparing manuscripts, and presenting results at meetings and conferences. The postdoctoral researcher will also have room to pursue their own research ideas, supported by strong computing infrastructure and an active research network.

Applicants should hold a PhD in physics, chemistry, biosciences, or a related field. A strong background in molecular dynamics simulations, ideally with GROMACS, and basic programming skills such as Python are preferred. Additional strengths include experience developing simulation or analysis tools, de novo protein design, or applying machine learning to simulation data. The role also expects independence, student supervision skills, collaboration with experimental partners, and fluency in spoken and written English. International experience and networks are considered an advantage.

This is a fixed-term 2-year postdoctoral appointment starting in January 2027, with a flexible start date. The group may support the successful candidate in applying for independent funding to extend the position. The typical starting salary is around 4000 EUR/month under the Finnish University Salary System.
