About this position
Tampere University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Wireless Systems research group at the Electrical Engineering Unit, Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. The position is part of the 3-year collaborative project FORMULA3: Framework for Optimal Resource Management Using Generalizable AI in FR3 Dynamic Programmable Wireless Environments, starting in Autumn 2026.
The project focuses on 6G and beyond wireless communications, especially the FR3 upper mid-band (7–24 GHz), with emphasis on AI-native and ISAC-enhanced resource management for programmable wireless environments. Research topics include reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), metallic reflector arrays, stacked intelligent metasurfaces, channel characterization, measurement-based modeling, dataset generation, generalizable learning, and testbed-oriented validation of wireless concepts.
The successful candidate will work on theoretical modeling, algorithm design, simulations, experimental validation, and possibly testbed development for dynamic indoor and outdoor-to-indoor scenarios. Depending on expertise, the work may also cover RIS-aided communications, context-aware wireless optimization, FR3 channel measurements, and robust AI/ML methods for wireless systems. The role includes scientific publishing, reporting and dissemination, participation in project management, mentoring Ph.D. students, and supervision of thesis projects. Occasional travel to international conferences and potential research visits to other institutions are expected.
Eligibility highlights: a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, wireless communications, or a related area; strong background in physical-layer communications, RIS/programmable wireless environments, FR3/mmWave channel modeling or measurements, or AI/ML for wireless communications; at least three publications in top IEEE ComSoc journals as main contributing author; good English; and the ability to conduct independent research in a multidisciplinary international team.
Funding and terms: the post is fixed-term for 24 months with possible extension. Salary follows the Finnish University Salary System at levels 5–6, with a typical starting salary of about 4000 EUR per month. A six-month trial period applies.
Application deadline: 3 August 2026 (23:59 Europe/Helsinki). Applications and attachments must be submitted in English via the online recruitment system.
