About this position
The University of Notre Dame is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for an interdisciplinary project on the integrated assessment of data center development in Indiana and the broader Midwest. The research examines how rapidly changing data center infrastructure affects and depends on power, water, land, health, workforce, and other resources, while considering the implications for communities and regional sustainability.
The project will develop a spatially explicit, contextually informed, and justice-centered framework for understanding the multidimensional impacts of data centers. It will connect social, technical, economic, environmental, and policy perspectives to support decisions about current development and the design of future data centers. The work will also examine how local, state, and national policies can guide more sustainable and equitable growth.
The fellow will join a diverse postdoctoral cohort working across large language models, machine learning, infrastructure sustainability, policy, environmental economics, community resilience, and spatial modeling. Research activities may include using AI and large language models for data collection and synthesis; modeling electricity, water, land, and physical-infrastructure demands; analyzing social, economic, workforce, and health effects; applying participatory and justice-oriented methods; and conducting policy analysis.
Key contributions will include designing interdisciplinary research, developing evaluation frameworks for the environmental, technical, economic, social, and policy dimensions of data centers, creating accessible decision-support tools for scenario planning, co-authoring research publications, and contributing to collaborative grant development. The fellow will work with Notre Dame faculty and partners through the Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative and Notre Dame Energy, within a research environment that brings ecological, social, economic, and ethical dimensions of sustainability together.
