About this position

The University of British Columbia is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the PERCS project: Perennial Ecosystem Restoration for Carbon Sequestration. This full-time postdoctoral opening is based at UBC Vancouver Campus in Canada and sits in the Rhemtulla Lab / Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences within the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Stewardship.

The project brings together Canadian universities, partner organizations, and a multidisciplinary team working on carbon sequestration, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the adoption potential of perennial plantings in agricultural landscapes. The fellow will support the Spatial Science/Synthesis component, with a strong focus on landscape ecology, agroecology, agrobiodiversity, spatial analysis, restoration ecology, and ecosystem services.

Primary responsibilities include coordinating ecological field data collection in the Lower Fraser Valley, supervising undergraduate research assistants, integrating biodiversity and ecosystem service datasets across project components, and conducting spatial analyses to assess how landscape structure influences multifunctionality. The role also includes collaboration on study design, implementation, analysis, publication, and communication of findings through papers, reports, conferences, and partner workshops.

Eligibility highlights include a PhD in a relevant field, experience with ecological fieldwork in agricultural systems, advanced biostatistics, and proficiency with tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, R, and Google Earth Engine. Experience handling large spatial datasets and interest in combining social and ecological data are assets. The position values collaborative, interdisciplinary research and strong communication skills.

Compensation is stated as $70,000 per year plus benefits. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of a one-year renewal. Full consideration is given to applications received by September 30, 2026, and applications remain open until a suitable candidate is found.

To apply, submit your application through Workday with a cover letter, CV, and three references. Applicants may also indicate if they are a better fit for one of the other PERCS postdoctoral openings. Questions about this position should be directed to Dr. Jeanine Rhemtulla.

Funding details

Expected salary is $70,000/year plus benefits. Initial appointment is for 1 year with possibility of renewal for an additional year upon satisfactory performance.

What's required

A PhD in a relevant discipline is required, with expertise in landscape ecology, spatial ecology, agroecology, or data science/data management. Candidates should have experience working in and knowledge of sustainable agricultural systems, agroecology, agroforestry, ecosystem services, or restoration; experience designing and collecting ecological field data in agricultural systems; working knowledge of ecological research methodology and advanced biostatistics; computer proficiency with spatial analysis tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, R, and Google Earth Engine; and experience assembling, organizing, and analyzing large ecological or spatial datasets. Experience with diverse spatial approaches and metrics for landscape structure and connectivity, and interest in integrating social and ecological data, are assets. Strong independent research, collaboration, and English communication skills are expected.

How to apply

Apply via Workday and submit a cover letter, CV, and names/contact information for 3 references. Mention in your cover letter if you are also interested in another PERCS PDF position and state your preference. For questions, contact Dr. Jeanine Rhemtulla by email.
