About this position

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Marine Microbiology at the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Bergen, Norway.

This fixed-term 4-year postdoctoral position is part of the VireVapp project, Deciphering virus–host coevolution across the domains of life, funded by the FRIPRO program of the Research Council of Norway (RCN). The project uses a marine model system built around haptophytes and their giant viruses to study virus-host coevolution.

The successful candidate will work experimentally with cultures of microalgae and viruses in the laboratory, using both classical and molecular methods. The project also includes bioinformatics analyses to investigate coevolutionary dynamics in natural marine environments and across different domains of life. This is a research-intensive role in a strong academic environment with opportunities for development and, where relevant, qualifying work related to teaching or other academic experience.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD equivalent in marine microbiology. PhD candidates may apply if the thesis defence is completed by 2026-09-01, but the degree must be awarded before appointment. Required experience includes cultural experiments and work with algal virus-host systems, plus extensive background in marine microbial ecology, especially viral ecology and/or evolution. Bioinformatics and transcriptomics experience is an advantage. Strong English communication skills, independence, structure, and collaborative ability are important.

Funding and employment: the post is funded through the RCN FRIPRO project. The advertised salary is NOK 685,900 per year before tax, with possible increases by seniority and potential higher pay for highly qualified candidates. The position includes Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund membership and welfare benefits.

How to apply: submit your application through Jobbnorge with a motivation statement, a detailed qualification letter mapping your experience to each requirement, CV, references/certificates, publication list with links, transcripts/diplomas, and a confirmation of expected PhD award if relevant. Provide two referees, including your main PhD advisor. Certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded if needed.

Contact: Prof. Ruth-Anne Sandaa ([email protected]) for scientific questions; Magnus Skogstad ([email protected]) for HR questions.
