About this position
The University of Bergen in Bergen, Norway, invites applications for a three-year, full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Synthetic Data Generation at the Centre for the Science of Learning & Technology (SLATE), within the AI LEARN centre.
The project focuses on privacy-preserving technologies, responsible data sharing, trustworthy AI, and synthetic data for learning and educational applications. The researcher will develop, evaluate, and validate synthetic data generation methods that maintain high data utility while reducing re-identification and privacy-leakage risks. The work will support secure collaboration with AI LEARN’s academic, public-sector, and industrial partners without relying on real data.
Key activities include developing novel synthetic-data models for educational settings, validating models with AI LEARN partners, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at conferences, contributing to the Technological Advancements cluster, and participating in research communication and dissemination. The successful candidate is expected to live and work in Bergen.
Applicants need a PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Information Security, Learning Analytics, Statistics, or a related discipline, or a doctoral thesis submitted for assessment before the deadline. Strong Python and/or R programming, Git or similar version-control experience, and expertise in machine learning, statistical learning, data analytics, or generative modelling are required. Relevant experience in synthetic data, differential privacy, cybersecurity, federated learning, anonymisation, decentralised data sharing, AI in Education, or Learning Analytics is advantageous.
The application requires a motivation letter, CV, a maximum six-page original research proposal, academic transcripts and diplomas, publications, a publication list, referee details, and a repository link if available. The salary is NOK 685,900 annually before tax, with pension and welfare benefits. Applications are due by 18 November 2026.
