The PhD project focuses on privacy-preserving protocols for digital identity wallets , including the EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. The student will study how cryptographic tools such as zero-knowledge proofs and anonymous credentials can support selective disclosure, pseudonymity, and unlinkability in real-world wallet deployments, while also examining the privacy and security risks that emerge when wallets are used across public and private services. The work combines protocol design, impl...

About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is recruiting a full-time PhD Candidate in Privacy-Preserving Digital Wallets at the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology in Trondheim, Norway.

The doctoral project will design, implement, and analyze privacy-preserving protocols for digital identity wallets, including the EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. Research topics include zero-knowledge proofs, anonymous credentials, selective disclosure, pseudonymity, unlinkability, digital identity, verifiable credentials, privacy-enhancing technologies, cryptography, usable security, and the balance between privacy, security, and usability. Solutions will be evaluated through security analysis and user studies.

The position is part of the NTNU-funded project Cryptology and social life: Sovereignty, security and society meet digital wallets and involves participation in the NTNU Applied Cryptology Lab (NaCl). The candidate will collaborate with three other PhD candidates, participate in international research activities, publish and disseminate research, and undertake relevant teaching.

Applicants need a relevant master's degree in information security, cryptology, computer science, or an equivalent discipline, including an independent project of at least 30 ECTS. A master's degree must be completed and documented by August 31, 2027. A master's average equivalent to B or better is normally required, along with strong English communication skills and the ability to work across disciplines. Experience with applied cryptography, privacy-enhancing technologies, EUDI Wallets, verifiable credentials, usable security, programming, or cryptographic protocol implementation is advantageous.

This is a four-year salaried appointment: three years of doctoral work and one year of career-promoting duties such as teaching. The normal gross salary is NOK 580,000 per year, subject to a 2% pension contribution. The planned start date is August 2027. Applications must include academic transcripts and diplomas, CV, a two-page motivation and research statement, master's thesis or draft, optional publications and certificates, and three referees.
