About this position
Postdoctoral Research Scholars in Environmental Monitoring and Biomonitoring are sought by IIHR—Hydroscience and Engineering and the Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination (CHEEC) at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, United States. Multiple full-time positions will contribute to the Iowa Integrated Network for Science, Information, and Geospatial Health Tracking (Iowa INSIGHT), a statewide initiative studying how environmental exposures affect human health.
Under the supervision of Dr. David M. Cwiertny, researchers will work on environmental monitoring and biomonitoring involving water, air, soil, sediment, heterogeneous environmental media, and human biospecimens such as blood, serum, urine, and breast milk. Research topics include exposure assessment, PFAS, pesticides, algal toxins, unregulated disinfection byproducts, cancer, maternal and newborn health, reproductive health, and neurodevelopmental disorders. The work combines environmental science, environmental engineering, analytical chemistry, and public health.
Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health, or a related field before starting. Required technical experience includes environmental or biospecimen sample preparation and LC-MS/MS analysis, along with strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to explain research findings to the public. Experience with field sampling, non-targeted LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, contaminant analysis, interdisciplinary collaboration, laboratory mentoring, and grant writing is desirable.
The initial appointment is full-time for one year, with renewal possible based on satisfactory performance and continued funding. Salary is commensurate. Applications require a curriculum vitae, letters of interest, contact information for three references, and three reference letters. The position remains open until filled.

What's required
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health, or a related field before starting. Required qualifications include significant experience processing environmental samples, such as water, air, and heterogeneous media, and/or biospecimens including whole blood, serum, urine, or breast milk; significant expertise analyzing environmental or biospecimen samples using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS); the ability to communicate research findings to the general public at the interface of environmental engineering and environmental health; and effective oral and written communication skills. Desirable qualifications include field collection of diverse environmental samples, non-targeted LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, analysis of PFAS, pesticides, algal toxins, and disinfection byproducts, exposure assessment and biomonitoring, interdisciplinary collaboration, laboratory student mentoring, and grant writing or fundraising experience. Applications require a curriculum vitae, letters of interest, contact information for three references, and three reference letters.
