About this position
The University of Reading is recruiting a postdoctoral research scientist to develop a novel statistical approach for framing extreme-event storylines in likelihood space. The project will use conditional probabilities to distinguish between dynamical and thermodynamic effects in climate extremes.
The post-holder will work in the Department of Meteorology within the EXTREME-FUTURES research project. The project aims to create a seamless framework for attribution, forecasting and climate-change risk assessment of extreme weather events. The research will combine probabilistic modelling with atmospheric data analysis and knowledge of weather and climate processes.
The role is supervised by Professor Ted Shepherd at the University of Reading, with co-supervision from Professor Hayley Fowler of Newcastle University. The University of Reading is described as a world-leading centre for meteorology and climate, offering a large and vibrant community of early-career researchers. The research environment will also benefit from the planned move of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts onto campus in 2027.

What's required
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in meteorology or a related field, an excellent peer-reviewed publication record demonstrating research ability, proficiency in atmospheric data analysis, good written and communication skills, and the ability to work independently. Knowledge of multivariate statistical modelling, atmospheric dynamics, extreme weather events, climate variability and change, and weather and climate modelling is required. Knowledge of machine learning, causal effect networks, or climate storylines is desirable but not essential.
