The University of Reading is recruiting a postdoctoral research scientist to develop a novel statistical approach for framing extreme-event storylines in likelihood space. The project will use conditional probabilities to distinguish between dynamical and thermodynamic effects in climate extremes. The post-holder will work in the Department of Meteorology within the EXTREME-FUTURES research project. The project aims to create a seamless framework for attribution, forecasting and climate-change r...

About this position

The University of Reading is seeking a postdoctoral research scientist to work in its Department of Meteorology on the AUSPICE project. The research focuses on diagnosing predictable atmospheric circulation signals in climate models and observations, assessing their implications for climate predictions and projections, and developing corrections for model errors.

The post-holder will develop a robust statistical framework and use causal networks to investigate relationships within the climate system. The work combines atmospheric data analysis, multivariate statistical modelling, atmospheric dynamics, climate variability and change, and climate modelling.

The researcher will work under the supervision of Ted Shepherd, Grantham Professor of Climate Science, and Jochen Broecker, Associate Professor of Environmental Data Analysis. The project is situated within the University of Reading’s Department of Meteorology, a world-leading centre for meteorology and climate with a large early-career research community. The project also involves the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, which is expected to move onto the University of Reading campus in 2027.

This is a fixed-term research position running until 31 December 2029, with the possibility of further extension.
