About this position
Karolinska Institutet is recruiting a full-time postdoctoral researcher in adipose tissue vascular biology at the Department of Medicine, Solna, in Stockholm, Sweden. The project is led by Associate Professor Carolina Hagberg within the Lipid Handling in Health and Cardiometabolic Disease research group and the wider Cardiovascular Theme.
The research investigates how the endothelial barrier in white adipose tissue shapes lipid handling in health and disease, and how adipose tissue expansion contributes to obesity-related cardiometabolic disease, including dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance. The postdoctoral researcher will combine humanized in vitro models using primary human microvascular endothelial cells and unilocular adipocyte spheroids with functional in vivo mouse experiments. Omics analyses, including transcriptomics, will complement the experimental work.
Applicants should hold a recent PhD or equivalent Swedish qualification and have strong experimental experience in vascular biology and adipose tissue research. Required skills include primary endothelial-cell culture, transwell models, 3D adipose tissue spheroids, mouse experiments, intravenous tracing, image-based tracer analysis, GTT and ITT, animal-experiment planning and documentation, and animal-colony maintenance. Excellent written and spoken English is required.
The position is temporary, full time, and based at BioClinicum on KI’s Solna campus, with access to collaborations, core facilities, the Centre for Molecular Medicine, and the Karolinska Hospital. Applications must include a PhD certificate, complete résumé, publication list, and a one-page summary of current work. The application deadline is 17 November 2026.

What's required
Applicants must have a PhD or a foreign degree considered equivalent to a Swedish PhD, fulfilled no later than the employment decision. A doctoral degree completed within the last three years is advantageous, although earlier completion may be accepted for special reasons. Required experience includes culture and transwell models using primary endothelial cells, 3D adipose tissue spheroid models, in vivo mouse work including intravenous tracing, image-based analysis of tracer accumulation, glucose tolerance tests (GTT), insulin tolerance tests (ITT), planning and documentation of animal experiments, and maintenance of animal colonies. Excellent spoken and written English is required. Teamwork, transcriptomics experience, scientific expertise, creativity, independence, ambition, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail are advantageous.
How to apply
Prepare the application in English or Swedish with a PhD certificate, complete résumé, complete publication list, and a maximum one-page summary of current work. Submit the application through the Varbi recruitment system before 17 November 2026.
