About this position

Maastricht University’s Brightlands Future Farming Institute (BFFI) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Autonomous Controlled Environmental Agriculture in the Netherlands. The project sits at the intersection of controlled environment agriculture, plant sensing, crop modelling, computer vision, data science, and agricultural engineering, with a strong focus on next-generation autonomous crop monitoring and decision-support systems for greenhouse and vertical farming.

The successful candidate will work on non-destructive sensing and integrated analytics for CEA, including canopy light interception monitoring, visible/NIR spectral sensing for sugar, starch, chlorophyll, and water status estimation, AI-based crop vision, and multi-sensor decision-support frameworks. The research will combine plant sensors, environmental data, and crop growth/transpiration models to support more precise and sustainable crop management.

The position is based at BFFI in Venlo, in close collaboration with Maastricht University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Sensor Engineering group, and the Department of Advanced Computer Science. The role is highly interdisciplinary and includes experiments in university growth chambers and greenhouse facilities, followed by validation in commercial-scale greenhouse operations in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant field such as plant science, crop science, agricultural engineering, biosystems engineering, horticulture, applied physics, or data science. Experience in crop modelling, plant sensing, or data-driven crop management is required, along with experience translating research into practical applications and working with academic and industry partners. Experience in CEA or greenhouse cultivation is expected. Strong English skills (minimum C1) are required; Dutch is an advantage.

The appointment is a 12-month contract at 0.8–1.0 FTE, with the prospect of a 1-year extension. Salary is €4,925–€6,682 gross per month (full-time), plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. The deadline is 30 November 2026, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

What's required

Experience with CEA, greenhouse cultivation, or another controlled growing environment is expected. Teaching, outreach, or international research network experience is an advantage. Excellent English at minimum C1 level is required; Dutch is an advantage.
