About this position
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for the RoboChem project at the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS), Faculty of Science, in the Netherlands.
The successful researcher will help develop a unified autonomous platform for chemical research. The work combines robotic experimentation, automated data acquisition, advanced analytical analysis, kinetic monitoring, machine learning and intelligent experiment planning to optimize and predict reaction outcomes. Responsibilities include designing and updating a modular self-driving laboratory, integrating robotic liquid handlers, pumps, reactors, analytical instruments and environmental sensors, and implementing optimization workflows.
The platform will be applied to challenging problems in synthetic chemistry, catalysis and related areas. The researcher will collaborate with chemists, computer scientists and engineers, publish in leading journals, present at international conferences and mentor students. The role is based within the Noël Research Group at HIMS, which develops catalytic strategies and technological tools bridging chemical engineering and organic synthetic chemistry.
Candidates must have a PhD in chemistry or a related field, strong English communication and scientific writing skills, and the ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams. Interest in automation, high-throughput experimentation and machine learning, together with enthusiasm for Python-based scientific programming, is expected.
The appointment is an eight-month temporary employment contract at 38 hours per week, with a gross monthly salary of €3,706–€5,760, plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end allowance. Additional benefits include pension, holiday hours, parental and partner leave, professional development opportunities and possible eligibility for the Dutch 30% ruling. The preferred start date is by 1 January 2027. Apply by 1 November 2026 with a motivation letter, CV and at least one academic reference.
