About this position

Northumbria University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for Project WHOWL, a UKRI/EPSRC-funded project focused on bio-inspired wind energy and nature-based engineering. The project is the only one in its EPSRC call focused on wind energy and aims to design wind turbine blades that are both more efficient and quieter by taking inspiration from humpback whales and owls.

The role sits at the intersection of mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, fluid dynamics, aeroacoustics, and bio-inspired design. The post is led by Xiang Shen (Senior Lecturer, Northumbria University), with co-lead Dr Graham Askew (University of Leeds) and project partners including Prof Frank Fish (West Chester University of Pennsylvania / WhalePower Corporation, USA), Dr Graham M. Smith, and Dr Peter Greaves (Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult).

This is described as a fully funded opportunity and includes a ring-fenced £75k career development package for early-career researchers. The package supports tailored training, international research visits, and industry mentoring.

Applicants with experience or interest in dynamic stall, blade design, experimental and computational aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, and/or bio-inspired/biomechanism design are especially encouraged to apply. The opportunity is based at Northumbria University in the United Kingdom.

Interested candidates should use the application link provided in the post and review the full job details on the university recruitment portal. No deadline was stated in the post.
