About this position

Université Côte d’Azur and the Institut de Chimie de Nice (CNRS UMR7272) are offering a postdoctoral research position with Prof. Alice Mija in biorefinery side-stream valorization for sustainable polymer and composite materials. The project aims to transform underutilized biorefinery by-products and residual streams into high-value functional materials for use in polymers, thermosetting systems, coatings, and composite materials.

The research is highly interdisciplinary and combines chemical characterization, structure–composition analysis, materials formulation, and processing. The successful candidate will study selected biorefinery side-products, identify and quantify their main constituents, and explore their use as bio-based monomers, modifiers, additives, fillers, crosslinkers, or functional components in advanced materials. A major goal is to create innovative and sustainable valorization pathways that maximize value while minimizing environmental impact.

Methodologically, the work may involve NMR, FTIR, GC/LC, TGA, DSC, rheology, microscopy, and mechanical or thermo-mechanical testing. The position also includes the development of bio-based or partially bio-based thermosetting resins, coatings, polymer composites, and multifunctional composite materials. The project is especially relevant for candidates interested in the intersection of analytical chemistry, polymer formulation, organic chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science.

The post is based in Nice, France, in a multidisciplinary research environment with access to laboratory facilities and characterization equipment. The group offers opportunities for collaboration with academic and industrial partners, scientific publications, international conferences, and the development of an independent research profile. Eligibility requires a PhD or equivalent in polymer science, chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, materials engineering, or a closely related field. Experience with the chemical characterization of complex mixtures or biomass-derived products is highly advantageous, as is experience with polymer synthesis, formulation, curing/crosslinking, coatings or composite processing. Candidates should have a strong scientific background in polymers, composites or advanced materials, experimental research experience, the ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent written and oral communication skills in English, and a strong publication record appropriate to career stage.
